Categories are the topic or subject tagging system in use on the P2P Foundation Wiki.  At the bottom of most pages on this wiki you will see text that looks like "Category: Peer Production | Peer Governance". Peer Production and Peer Governance are two of the more common categories applied to articles on the site.  By clicking on a category at the bottom of the page you can view additional articles in that category.

You can place your article in a category the same way by adding a "Category Tag" to your article. Here's what a category tag looks like inside the edit page of your article.  You could copy this text exactly, paste it into your article, and you article would then show up in the "Peer Production" category.

Below are two category tags.
Put category tags (anywhere) on a page, and the page will show the category at the bottom,
and is listed on the relevant Category page.

For more than one category, simply repeat the same pattern.

Creating subcategories
If you think a new subcategory would be appropriate here are some instructions for how to turn a category into a subcategory of another category.
</pre>
#To create a subcategory you must know what category your subcategory will be "under".
#Visit the page that will be in the subcategory.
#Edit the page and add in Category:My Subcategory
#Save the page, scroll to the bottom, and click on 'My Subcategory'
#This is the new subcategory page.  You will now edit this page and save it.
#Now add the 'top' category by adding Category:"My Top Category" and save it.
#When the page refreshes you can see "Category:My Top Category".
#If you click on "My Top Category" you will see your subcategory in the "Subcategories" section just above the list of pages near bottom.
# As an example you can see the subcategory "Global Commons" on the page http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Commons

What are Categories?

Categories form the topic or subject tagging system in use on the P2P Foundation Wiki. At the bottom of most pages on this wiki you will see a shaded box that looks like this:

Category: Peer Production | Peer Governance

Peer Production and Peer Governance are two of the categories applied to articles on the site. The category name at the bottom of the page links to the category page, where you can see a list of all articles in that category.

How to Use Categories

You can place your article in a category the same way by adding one or more Category tags to your article. Below are two category tags. Put category tags (anywhere) on a page, and the page will show the category at the bottom, and is listed on the relevant Category page.

For more than one category, simply repeat the same pattern.

Which Category to Choose

 • Each page should have at least one category, and as many as are useful.
 • Do not create new categories unless there is a very good reason for this. Consult other contributors first!
 • For in depth information visit the P2P Foundation Wiki Taxonomy page
