The Introduction to the P2P Foundation Wiki Material about the Collaborative Economy compiled by Michel Bauwens gives a wide selection of references, typologies, and links to other articles.

Various definitions have been suggested, and are given in our page on the Collaborative Economy - Concept. Wikipedia has an article on the Sharing economy, suggesting that the "Sharing economy is a term for a way of distributing goods and services, a way that differs from the traditional model of corporations hiring employees and selling products to consumers. In the sharing economy, individuals are said to rent or "share" things like their cars, homes and personal time to other individuals in a peer-to-peer fashion".

However, the definition of the Sharing Economy is generally taken to include platforms like AirBnB and Uber, which we now recognise as 'extractive'. Recently there is more general agreement within the community talking about the Commons that those kinds of platform are not in any deep way collaborative. (See Sharewashing.)

According to Google Trends, interest in the term peaked around 2016, which makes sense given the introductory material disseminated around 2012 to 2013. It is one of the terms, but by no means the only one in use, to describe the kind of economy that fits with the Commons, with the Transition Initiative etc.
