Music as a catalyst for change

Michel. I admire the bold steps you and your friends are taking!

I'm a musician and songwriter among other things and I would love to get your thoughts on how recordings of original music and live concerts and performances will work in the new systems that are emerging. The implications of the 21st Century realm of royalty-free music are astoundingly complex against the backdrop of the RIAA, Hollywood, Wall Street models of the 20th Century.

Some questions:

• How was popular music used to build wealth for the 1% in the past. Was it fair?
• How shall the paradigm shift toward musical creativity forming a core good for monetized distribution networks of the future for the 99% within a commons-based model?.
• How can a new repository system be seeded with content independently from the current mainstream? Can I make a living from it?
• Is there a usable replacement for the "supply and demand equation" of the past that could apply to music production and distribution in the Commons?

We all understand that it's a tough 'market' to break into and imbalances occur frequently between producers, middlemen and consumers. I want my OzoneFarm Platform to provide ways and means for me and people like me to produce and distribute our musical goods and services to those who want and need them in the most beautiful and loving way possible. I want to change the phrase "proceeds of concerts" to the "fruits of gatherings" where our music is used to bring people into the creative process rather than blocking them out of it and making them "pay toll to the troll" to build a taller silo. I believe strongly that Music as a whole will be a major driver of some very good change in a very short time. Please have a look at some evidence and let me know what you think.

Open Music Business Models

Hi CQ, you may have seen that we have a Music and ]http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Culture] section, with the latter having material on the filesharing debate (economic impacts). In Diigo and delicious, under mbauwens, I have Open-Music-Business-Models tags, keeping track of what is written on the topic. A study in Norway has shown that at least there musicians are earning more post-filesharing than before, though of course the overall majority of musicians and artists are still precarious, as they have been through most of modern history (in traditional societies, your place was fixed and cared for, with patronage filling in the gaps). You may also check out the publications of the Free Culture Forum, of which I am a member, and the 2nd report is on business models. For general info on how to deal with IP-free shared innovation commons, see our sections on Business Models and on P2P Funding. I've never had the time to do a synthesis though. Your project looks very much in tune with what the more advanced artists are trying to achieve, and thee must be a few similar platforms out there (I've seen one in Sweden or Norway, but can't remember the name). Check out Pat Kane's true fans model, which seems to work for him. Will check your link.

TeX for Math Formulas

I forget who I was supposed to ask about getting MediaWiki's subset of TeX implemented here, as I am using it more and more for logic and math work. JonAwbrey 12:45, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
