• The Chair is directed by Nicolas Postel, Professor of Economics at the University of Lille and researcher at CLERSE.

The Chair studies alternatives to contemporary capitalist systems of production and consumption through the lens of the commons.

• Its work is explicitly concerned with:
  • ecological transition,
  • post-growth economics,
  • the re-embedding of economic activity within democratic and ecological constraints.

• Its central thesis is that commons-based institutions can reconnect domains that modern capitalism has tended to separate:
  • production and consumption,
  • economy and society,
  • efficiency and ethics,
  • democratic deliberation and economic activity.

The Chair draws on intellectual traditions ranging from Karl Marx to Elinor Ostrom and investigates commons-based institutions as practical alternatives capable of supporting a post-growth socio-economic model.

• Current research projects include:
  • commons as a regulatory framework for post-growth societies,
  • ecological accounting and socio-ecological indicators,
  • social and solidarity economy,
  • territorial ecological planning,
  • democratic governance of production.

Discussion

• The Chaire Socio-Économie des Communs represents one of the most developed efforts within contemporary French political economy to formulate a commons-centered post-growth paradigm.

• Its work seeks to understand how commons institutions can contribute to ecological sustainability, democratic governance, and the transformation of economic systems beyond the state/market dichotomy.
