Abstract
"The final chapter explores how the seed form of commonism—the commons—can become societally dominant. It introduces the five-step process, a heuristic model for analysing historical processes of qualitative change. It discusses various existing commons such as open pastures, free software and commoning within top-end multinationals or social movements, as well as their limits and strengths. The main section assesses different scenarios of a shift in dominance from capitalism to commonism, such as slow expansion, crisis, partner state and social movements. It ends with some remarks on current practices."

"In this chapter we intend to develop the commonist seed form theory. The name is based on the assumption that the new society develops from seed forms. In Chap. 3 we presented the idea that a qualitative change of society towards a free society must be conceptualised (and carried out) as a constituting process of a new form of society. This theoretical demand is our starting point. The seed form theory is a possibility of giving substance to this demand of transvolution. It is not the only way of doing this. The framework we have previously described allows for the inclusion of other transvolution theories, and we invite their development. The presentation of the elements of the seed form theory aims at opening it to discussion and criticism, thus enabling further development. The seed form theory attempts to conceptualise the qualitative change of the societal form.
A new society does not fall from the sky but must emerge from the old society. So, the point is: how does a new form of society emerge from the old one? To this, the seed form theory answers that the new can already be found in the old but still in the form of a seed, enclosed in the old conditions. And yet, this seed form embodies the quality it can develop into a new society. In our theory of society (cf. Chap. 5, 2.) we discussed the mediation form as a decisive element of society. That is why the new quality of the seed form must appear as a new mediation form. This new mediation form is restricted in the old society and only becomes dominant in the new society."

"how does the new order choose itself? Here the biologist Bruce Lipton, the same scientist who offered us the term saturation, reaches for the image of the caterpillar. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar does not sprout wings; it dissolves, its body breaking down into an undifferentiated cellular soup. Floating in that soup are what biologists call imaginal cells, cells carrying the pattern of a butterfly that does not yet exist. At first they appear in ones and twos, isolated, and the dissolving body does not know what to make of them. Then they begin to find one another. They link, they resonate, they reach a critical coherence, and past that threshold the whole soup reorganizes itself around them: not by majority vote, not by force, but because a coherent pattern, once it catches, recruits everything around it into its order.
Joanna Macy points to the same threshold in the language of physics. Cooled gently enough, pure water will fall far below freezing and still refuse to turn to ice, suspended in a trembling, metastable stillness until a single speck of dust gives the first few molecules a lattice to lock onto. Once that seed catches, the crystalline order races outward until the entire body of water has conformed to a structure that began in a handful of atoms.
These are the small islands of coherence, a concept often attributed to Prigogine, the pockets of a new coherent pattern by which a system far from equilibrium reincorporates into its next form. The butterfly is not a better caterpillar. It is a different grammar of what that life can be, brought into existence by a handful of cells holding a pattern steady while the old body falls apart.
Margaret Wheatley translated Prigogine’s physical science observation into the parlance of human social systems. The world, she wrote with Deborah Frieze, does not change one person at a time; it changes when separate, local efforts find one another and connect, when we stop chasing critical mass and start fostering critical connections. Isolated experiments link into networks, networks thicken into communities of practice, and then, “suddenly and surprisingly,” a new system emerges at a larger scale, carrying powers that none of the participants possessed alone. It is the lifecycle of emergence, and it is the social equivalent of the imaginal cells. The coherent few do not defeat the old order. They out-cohere it.
That is how a grammar evolves. Not by winning the argument inside the old one, but by meeting the chaos of collapse with coherence: a new order crystallizes the moment one of the many latent possibilities achieves enough coherence to cohere the rest. Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge found the same rhythm written across the fossil record and called it punctuated equilibrium, not the smooth ascent of the textbooks but long stasis broken by sudden, structural leaps.
The decisive point is this: a change of grammar is never the next move in the old dialectic. You cannot reach it by winning, because winning is a move inside the rules that are ending. No synthesis takes you there. Only a phase change does. This is why Marx could not lead us out, and why Land, flooring the same accelerator, only drives us deeper in. Both understand the old game brilliantly. Neither can change the board.
And here, at last, we can say the thing about Marx that he could not say about himself. What he was reaching for, a world without alienation, where people meet in solidarity rather than competition, where the wealth of the earth is held in common and freely given, was real, and it remains the truest description of the destination we are circling. But it was never reachable by seizing the means of production, because it was never, at the root, an economic arrangement. It was an ontological one. A society of genuine reciprocity cannot be assembled out of selves who experience themselves as fundamentally separate, any more than a dictatorship of the proletariat could force a caterpillar into flight. Care, mutuality, solidarity, subsidiarity, the whole grammar of a world that coheres by giving, are not policies you bolt onto the buffered self. They are the organic behavior of a self that has come to experience itself as what it already is: a relationally bound participant in a living whole. True communism, if the word still means anything, was always the name of an ontological transformation rather than an economic one. Marx saw the destination with prophetic clarity and mistook it for a place you could march to. It is not a place. It is a different way of being a self, and you arrive only by crossing over, only by the kind of change that remakes the one who changes.
So let us finally give our current grammar its proper name. The grammar of modern civilization, beneath every political fight, shared by capitalist and Marxist alike, is what Charles Eisenstein calls the story of separation: the assumption that we are discrete selves, set down in a universe of dead matter that exists to be measured, exchanged, and used. That is the water we have been swimming in the whole time. And it is at last made visible as capital exhausts its outside and as the story devours the ecological body every grammar finally depends on.
When a grammar reaches that end, the system arrives at a threshold."
