"The author (unknown to me) claims he’s found a “survival-relevant value (valence)” switch in an ancient nucleus in the brain, the habenula. How it measures changes in dopamine flows determines whether a mind opts to approach or avoid something. If the switch lets the dopamine keep flowing, then approach, engage, explore, and empathize are felt to be right. But if the switch stifles the dopamine flow, then the feeling is to fear, avert, withdraw, defend.

According to the author,

- “We propose this binary, chemical switch is the primary mechanism of valence assignment. The habenula does not create the rich content of a sad memory or a joyful anticipation, but it applies the affective paint to those contents. … “The valence switch is not static. It is educated by experience, primarily via the hippocampus. This structure archives personal history, tagging memories with their affective outcomes. When novel data arrives, the hippocampus performs a pattern-match. A found match provides a learned valence tag (this was safe, this hurt), informing the habenula’s response. No match — the unknown — triggers the default cautious bias. Thus, the switch’s sensitivity is dynamically calibrated by the lived autobiography of the organism. … “If individual consciousness is a valenced field emanating from a personal switch, society is the interaction of billions of such fields. … “The central design challenge of our time may be to create an External Hippocampus — sociotechnical systems that provide reliable safety validation and foster connection, rather than exploiting our deepest defensive biases.” (Lynch, 2026)
