Bio

"Maria Bareli is an economist, currently pursuing her PhD in Sociology/Social Anthropology (University of Crete, School of Social Sciences, Sociology Department, Greece). Her thesis involves the study of the annual festivals of the Greeek island of Ikaria (the Ikarian paniyiries), which she has approached through the lens of the commons and the gift theory. She is also the founder and president of the Documentation Research and Action Center of Ikaria, a non-profit that is a product of collaboration between researchers and locals, and which aims at creating a knowledge commons of Ikarian culture as well as the conditions of equal exchange between locals and researches.
