Description

Stripey:

"DataFarming is the "business model" of running an online platform free-of-charge, while making money by harvesting personal information and other data from the people who sign up to use it. A platform funded by DataFarming - completely or in part - can be called a DataFarm (using camel case - capital letters inside the word - for neologisms like this helps people using screen readers). This has been the standard revenue source for online services since the mid-2000s, with honourable exceptions, both popular (eg Wikipedia, WordPress.com) and more obscure (eg Archive.org, pinboard.in, ghost.org)."
