Description

"What is the “commons”? This concept might seem unfamiliar, yet it has quietly taken root in various forms throughout the communities we live in, narrating the deep and diverse “Hong Kong story.”

This book presents the commons as a kind of ideal — the result of a collaborative effort by the faculty and students of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University. Through rigorous and serious academic essays, it introduces the historical context of the commons in Hong Kong, and explores how it can become a means for transforming society, the economy, culture, and sustainable living. At the same time, concise and accessible case studies are used to illustrate representative examples in the three categories of cooperation, environment, and space, providing a comprehensive view of the current practices and challenges in building and implementing commons in Hong Kong.

Grounded in the concept of the commons, we reimagine shared urban spaces and social relationships, exploring alternative possibilities for co-creating communities.

Commoning is not merely an everyday political concept — it is a socio-economic and cultural process. This process aims to cultivate and expand the number of members within the commons, who in turn become practitioners of alternative social relations and difference."
