A short note from the reading diary of Michel Bauwens, 2004:

According to Lacan, we do not experience reality as such, but symbolically through signifiers which only mean something by pointing to other signifiers.

We are beings of desire, one desire always pointing to another: were they to stop, we would cease to exist, as we are desire!

The self is what the narratives point to; it exists only through this pointing out, but does not exist 'as such', there is no essence.
