Clearance Culture or also "Rights Clearance Culture" = the process whereby, because of the extension of Intellectual Property and copyright provisions, clearance has to be asked for the use of previous material, resulting in a cumbersome process with many negative effects on free culture and innovation.

It is often opposed to Fair Use, as the principle allowing usage for non-profit ends.
