Context

"Ever since the fall of the Roman Empire, we have had a series of Dark Ages, which in fact were periods of incubation for new stages in human progress. According to Stavrianos, each transition in European history, including European expansion into Asia, Africa and the New World, has been accompanied by a rise in human consciousness, of feelings of self‐worth on the part of the common man. Even the serf had a purchase on dignity impossible for the slaves who did the manual labor in Imperial Rome. Nowadays, the theme of self‐determination and self‐assertion has spread around the globe, generating an explosive tension between the ruling classes and nations and the exploited, oppressed and dispossessed at home and abroad."
