Description

Sara Silva et al. :

"The watershed of the Mira river is one of the regions in Europe that is most at risk of desertification. In 2019, a collective of concerned inhabitants, under the umbrella organisation Project Earth, rallied together with a purpose: To regenerate the Mira watershed by focusing on its potential and not its problems. For the first few years, the collective focused on mapping the social ecosystem of the region, identifying the key stakeholders, meeting them in their place and cultivating collaborative relationships with them. This strategy showed a keen appreciation for the diversity of place and how multiple centres can exist in one bioregion, each with its own niche role to contribute to the ecosystem, both social and ecological. The Project Earth team applied a differential approach, adapting the way they engaged with each unique stakeholder group according to their needs and the context. This allowed them to catalyse the latent potential of this stakeholder ecosystem, as an ecosystem of bioregional stewards, or River Guardians."
