Maria Barelii

Maria Bareli is an economist, currenlty pursuing her PhD in Social Anthropology/Sociology at the School of Social Sciences, University of Crete, Greece. Her thesis involves the study of the annual festivals of the Greek island of Ikaria (Ikarian paniyiries), which she has approached through the lens of the commons and the theory of the gift. She is also the founder and president of the Documentation Research and Action Center of Ikaria, a non-profit, which is a product of collaboration among researchers and locals and which aims at creating a knowledge commons for Ikarian culture as well as the conditions for an equal exchange between locals and researchers.
