Bio

"Ludger Hovestadt is professor of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) at ETH Zürich. ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zürich is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, one of the most highly regarded technical universities in the world. As an architect, Ludger is particularly interested in spaces, and how people interact with them. If this sounds slightly obvious, then that’s because it is. What isn’t entirely obvious though, is how you get from being an architect to talking about energy. In Ludger’s case, this has to do with two pertinent facts: firstly, Ludger is also a computer scientist and, bringing the two disciplines together, he has a significant body of experience in developing, and heading up research into, ‘intelligent’ buildings. Beyond the design of buildings, one of Ludger’s main areas of interest is how to make the complex infrastructures that permeate our daily existence usable and, more important still, userfriendly. Crucially, out of this fusion of interests has come an invention, the digitalSTROM chip. We will be explaining this a bit further on, but in essence it offers a turnkey element to making smart grids, microgeneration and indeed in the longer term an ‘internet of energy’ a possible reality."
