= Green Computing coordination project proposed by the Open Grid Forum

Description

Craig Lee:

"The basic concept of the Green VM project is to coordinate existing green IT projects that are grid/cloud/ virtualization-related and maximize their visibility and impact. Green IT essentially requires a monitoring system for energy consumption whose information can be used to direct system behavior and enforce energy policy. Besides monitoring server electrical consumption, cooling energy consumption can also be monitored. Decision tools can then direct effectors, such as the initial placement or migration of VMs, or powering servers up or down. Current projects that have been in discussion are OpenNebula (UCM), Reservoir (EU), Green-Net (INRIA/Lyon), and Low Carbon ICT (Oxford). The GreenLight project from CalIT2 is another possibility. The goal here is to coordinate existing work, possibly around a reference model for green IT that clearly identifies areas for best practices and possible standards. This effort should be coordinated with other groups such as GreenGrid.org and ClimateSaversComputing.org. We should also coordinate with the EU wrt the EU Data Centre Code of Conduct."
