Axelrod's method centers on two computer tournaments of the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, in which researchers submitted competing strategies. In both rounds the winner was Anatol Rapoport's TIT FOR TAT — cooperate on the first move, then copy the opponent's previous move. From these results, Axelrod develops a framework for when cooperation can get established, spread, and resist defection, illustrated with cases including the informal truces that developed between opposing troops in WWI trench warfare and cooperation in biological systems (the biology chapter co-written with William D. Hamilton).
The book moves from theory (the tournaments, a chronology of cooperation) to empirical cases, to chapters on how to promote cooperation, to broader conclusions on the robustness of reciprocity.
