Contextual Quote

Abundance vs Scarcity in the AI Age: Why is nature still absent from the accounting of value ?

< "The accounting tradition on which national and corporate balance sheets rest, a tradition that treats the living substrate as a free, stable and perpetual background rather than as a balance sheet with a condition of its own." >

"Knowledge can be transmitted. Understanding cannot.

The greatest example of this is the child and the kettle. A child can be told that the kettle is hot and remains untold until the moment of touching it, which is why the elders of most traditions passed on wisdom as a story of how it was earned rather than as a set of instructions.

The listener receives the shape of an experience and recognises it later, when their own arrives.

A system that dispenses knowledge at almost no cost to the user therefore exposes what the knowledge economy spent two centuries obscuring. Information was the scaffold. Understanding, which is earned only through experience, was the building, which the machine cannot hand over, however eloquently it describes it.

Where the scarcity went: The answer arrives weightless on the screen. Behind it sits a physical account of electricity, cooling water, copper, silicon and land, and every query is a small withdrawal from that account.

Knowledge has been dematerialised for the user and rematerialised in the data centre.

The scarcity that left the library did not evaporate. It went back into the ground.

The Economic Index of Anthropic, in the reports cited below, is built from tasks, occupations and wages. Soil, water and ecosystems do not appear among its units of account. The only time I jump on a bandwagon is when I have finished making it, so I will not jump on anyone else’s, and I will state plainly that what Anthropic has done here is not a peculiarity of one company.

It is the inheritance of the accounting tradition on which national and corporate balance sheets rest, a tradition that treats the living substrate as a free, stable and perpetual background rather than as a balance sheet with a condition of its own."
