Michel Bauwens, 2004 reading notes:

Ulrich Beck, in his Society of Risk in '86, introduces the idea of a second modernity, in which technology is no longer a solution, but par tof the problem. Modernity is henceforth split from progress, and 'has to manage itself', master 'risk', and hence we have entered an age of 'reflexive modernity'.

Giddens in 1990 reacts against the conservative potential (coming from ecology) of Beck's ideas, by injecting the necessity of a 'utopian realism', to keep the dream alive.
