==Facts About Categories and Subcategories==
==What are Categories?==

* Fact: Subcategories show up on on [[Special:Categories]] page in the flat list of all categories.
At the bottom of most pages on this wiki you will see text that looks like:
* Fact: Subcategories get their own special spot on other category pages.
* Fact: Subcategories are not 'double listed' on category pages.  There are just pages named the same thing.  And they should probably be merged into the category page.

* When editing a page the usr is presented with no instructions for using categories.
This is how we organize pages on the wiki.
*It is unlikely that users will figure out how to use Categories on their own.
*One on the one hand users won't add a lot of new, potentially dead-end categories.  On the other hand, their information may fit well into a category and have to wait until a knowledgeable editor places it into one.

What are Categories?

At the bottom of most pages on this wiki you will see text that looks like:

[[Category:Peer Production]]

This is how we organize pages on the wiki.

How to Use Categories

Each page should have at least one category, and as many as are useful.

If your page is of a particular media type, like a Video, Article, or Book, then you can add that category.

If your page is about a certain subject, like Peer Production, then add that category as well.

You can take a look through the Category:P2P Foundation Knowledge Commons for some common categories.

Do not create new categories if at all possible. Unused categories make more administration work later as each category is a new page.
