"There are two aspects of "openness" (or freedom) that affect social networking; the license covering the source code of social networking software, and whether the internetworking protocol used is proprietary ("data silo" or "walled garden"), or a free/ open standard (made up one or more free/ open protocols), allowing for "federated" or "distributed" social networks."
