Abstract

Connecting the commons and the solidarity economy: A governance issue?

"This article explores the possible connections between the theory of the commons and the theory of the solidarity economy. While their development and conceptual approaches are very different, these two theories both go beyond a conceptual framework based solely on the opposition and/or complementarity between the market and the State. The article is based on research by PHARES, a community-interest cooperative and regional economic cooperation cluster in the Paris region that offers shared office space to its members, who are SSE organisations. The study shows that the ability of PHARES to implement collective governance and produce commons for the region is decisive for making meaningful connections between the commons and the solidarity economy."
