"Rideshares or Ride sharing or Carpooling (not to be confused with Carsharing ) is simply people cosolidating automobile trips by riding in one car, usually using a message board either real or online. This differs from hitchhiking in that the people involved coordinate the ride before-hand agreeing when and where to meet and how to share the costs. Ridesharing is safe and both cheaper and more environmentally friendly than riding alone. Rideshares are most practical on trips between large cities." (http://wiki.couchsurfing.com/en/Rideshares)

From the Wikipedia:

"Carpooling (also known as car-sharing, ride-sharing, lift-sharing and covoiturage), is the shared use of a car by the driver and one or more passengers, usually for commuting. Carpooling arrangements and schemes involve varying degrees of formality and regularity. Formal carpool projects have been around in a structured form since the mid-1970s."
