Danny Wildemeersch is an emeritus professor of ‘Comparative, Social and Intercultural Education’ at the University of Leuven in Belgium (1986 – 2013). He is now a visiting professor at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (Thailand). He also was a full professor of ‘Social Pedagogy and Andragogy’ at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands (1994-2002).He is a member of the ‘Laboratory of Education and Society’ in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the Leuven University ( His research focuses on a variety of themes such as intercultural education, social participation, intercultural dialogue, democratic citizenship, education for sustainable development, transitions from school to work, participation in development cooperation. He has published widely and in various languages, in books and papers on subjects like ‘Experiential Learning’, ‘Learning for Social Responsibility’, ‘Learning Citizenship’ and ‘Social Learning’. His teaching included subjects such as : adult education, comparative education, intercultural education and socio-cultural education. He has been teaching internationally as a visiting professor in several universities in Italy, Canada, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and South Africa. He has organized several conferences on Active and Democratic Citizenship (Brussels, 2000, Leuven, 2003, New York, 2005). He was an editor of the Dutch Language Journal ‘Vorming’ (Bildung) from 1986 till 1994. He is a member of the editorial board of the ‘International Journal of Lifelong Education’, and an editor of the ‘European Journal for the Research on the Education and Learning of Adults’ (RELA), which is a peer-reviewed open access journal. He is the president of a Leuven-based (Belgium) community organization called 'Leren Ondernemen' which supports families in poverty to emancipate from disenfranchising conditions.
