We can try to open up at least the discussion pages. The reCAPTCHA plugin for MediaWiki is fairly effective at blocking spammers, and opening up the talk pages allows for discussion and it makes the wiki a bit more RW accessible. Guaka 04:35, 30 October 2007 (PDT)

That experiment is fine with me!--Mbauwens 07:28, 31 October 2007 (PDT)

Parts of the wiki open

It could also be that we decide to open up parts of the wiki for periods of time. Parts where we think a wider feedback or development is needed. And, we could publicize that on the blog/front page of the wiki.

This could be done in a parallel media wiki instance that copies over the categories that are open, then copies back the material after a set amount of time, for instance...--SRose 15:04, 13 July 2008 (PDT)

I can't recommend opening a new wiki, since it would require quite a bit of maintenance. I looked into opening up talk pages for RW access, but unfortunately it's not possible with MediaWiki. However, I think it would be interesting to open the entire wiki for RW access for a while and just see if it causes any problems. At Hitchwiki we hardly have any problems with spam thanks to reCAPTCHA - instead there are regular new contributors who start editing "anonymously". Guaka 15:34, 15 July 2008 (PDT)

I'm open to experimenting, if captcha is implemented as a safeguard, but I think I'd like to sound out p2p'ers first, via the p2pf mailing list for example. I think that this can be done especially when I'm home and can react, and if we see problems, then we can close it while I'm away and can't react to vandalism
