P2P Foundation Community sites

  1. We now have a thriving Ning community at http://p2pfoundation.ning.com/
  2. p2presearch is a mailing list discussion for more academic topics, at http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org (see also the page on the Association of Peer to Peer Researchers)

Wiki Wish List

Dear Visitors:

I would like to use this page to call for volunteers who would like to help The Foundation for P2P Alternatives become a better platform on P2P developments and as a place to link up with people sharing similar values about a more participatory future.

Even if you update a page of your choice only once a week, over time, your contribution is substantial. Multiply it with other contributors, and the effect is dramatic.

If you want to help us, please write to michelsub2003 at yahoo dot com to get a user account, and feel free to leave comments here, edit, or go ahead doing this stuff if you already have an account.

It is possible to never use double []'s for internal pages, and just allow any page title to automatically 'link' whenever it happens to appear in written text. --Ownut 22:07, 27 January 2008 (PST)

Pretty cool. I'd be happy to install it if more people agree :) --Guaka 01:50, 27 July 2008 (PDT)
I support that idea --- FranzN 07:15, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I think this may be dangerous, and create many false positives for common words, perhaps we can first see an example of a wiki where this is applied?--Mbauwens 14:50, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
This sounds neat - is it possible to add it here, and if it is not liked - turning it off - or does it make changes that would need to be reverted? MarkDilley

i18n, g10n

  1. Developing and maintaining language-specific pages, which introduce the topic, and alert readers to resources in their language
  2. Developing country-specific pages: what's happening around P2P, participaton, the 'open' paradigm and the commons in your country?
  3. Translators: I would really love to have the basic CTheory essay (in English), or Revue du Mauss essay, both good summaries, translated into many different languages

Encyclopedia, Wikipedia

  1. Formalising the existing encyclopedia entries, in a way that is compatible with the Wikipedia format.
    • Guaka will do some work on this.
  2. See how our own encyclopedia and Wikipedia can enrich each other.
    • Problem: Wikipedia's license (GFDL) is totally not compatible with this wiki's license (CC-BY-NC-SA).
  3. Match every encyclopedia article with a 1) Wikipedia article; 2) associated books; 3) recommended blogs and websites
  4. Work on the internal referrals, i.e. matching the encyclopedia articles with the who's who, the podcasts and webcasts, other topics, etc...

Layout, user-friendliness

  1. Working to make the lay-out of the Wiki much more user-friendly
  2. help with making this standard MediaWiki look different, nicer. (tweaking colors, etc.)
  3. Write a page on naming conventions. Currently people are named two ways - for refernece LastName, FirstName and for editing the wiki FirstInitialLastName. For working within the wiki however, people will not be writing LastName, FirstName, too difficult. Maybe FirstInitialLastName, but more naturally is just your name. MarkDilley

- Note on naming conventions: Hi Mark, I do not agree with the use of CamelCase, which is machine language, though you could write your name "Firstname Lastname". However, the existing convention, taken from the library and documentation world, is "Lastname, Firstname". Since there are already hundreds of entries in that format, please let's stick to it.

  1. figure out if MediaWiki can put Recent Changes on the side of the front page.

News, agenda

  1. Developing a "News" page alerting visitors to new developments, in a way that is attractive to read
  2. Maintain an agenda of P2P-related events worldwide

These links were here already; the member list is pretty useless, full of the names of attempted spammers. Is there any way to list only the real members?

Open access

I finally installed the reCAPTCHA plugin and opened write access to "anonymous" editors. People cannot create accounts yet, but if our open-up experiment turns out to work fine we should open that as well. I protected the main page since it's too visible. The reCAPTCHA is shown whenever an "anonymous" editor wants to add a link. Spambots know this and sometimes do probes with random strings, but they're easily removed and not as bad as links. --Guaka 01:50, 27 July 2008 (PDT)

new favicon

Abundance came up with a nicer looking favicon. :) Guaka 21:42, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
