Mass Collaboration Architecture: how do we connect and support the collaboration efforts of large numbers of people and projects that have aligned interests?

There are many individuals and early stage projects that might benefit from identifying and working with others that have similar objectives and interests. Hence one way to view the fundamental challenge of developing a mass collaboration infrastructure is to break the problem down into two parts; identification Italic text(of those you might want to work with) and the an open project infrastructureItalic text to that makes it possible for a geographically dispersed group of people all over the world to come together and work together!

I have done work in both areas that I throw into the mix for evaluation purposes...
