Oxford Media Convention 2006: News and citizen engagement in the new media environment: do we need a new deal for media ethics, and how could trust be repaired?

The production of news has undergone profound changes over the past 10 years, with the rise of 24-hour news channels, and more instantaneous reporting. Meanwhile, the internet has given birth to entirely new forms of reportage and circulation of news, with 'citizen journalism' proving one of the most intriguing areas. This panel will look at the pros and cons of these developments, and aim to explore what actions should be taken by editors, journalists and regulators to ensure that citizens get access to news sources they can trust, and that these processes remain accessible and transparent.
