= Kannel is a compact and very powerful open source WAP and SMS gateway, used widely across the globe both for serving trillions of short messages (SMS), WAP Push service indications and mobile internet connectivity.

The Kannel project was founded by Wapit Ltd. in June, 1999. Wapit does no longer exist and the project is coordinated by the members of the Kannel Group which include former staff members of the the wireless business industry companies Trigenix Ltd. (UK), Wapme Systems AG (DE), ANAM (IE) and Global Networks Inc. (CH) among other individual developers and contributors. The Kannel Group is in the process of forming a legal body for the Kannel Project, the Kannel Software Foundation.
